Omaha hi Tips

As the case is with Texas Holdem, the key to implementing an Omaha poker strategy is knowing when to stay in the game, and knowing when to get out in order to minimize losses.  If you can recognize early on the chances of winning with your initial hand, you will know what is worth staying in for.

Remember that nothing is black or white in poker.  Therefore, always playing tight (folding early on) is not going to pay off 100% of the time.  Likewise, playing aggressively for indefinite lengths of time or at random intervals is not going to create a spotless winning record either.  It is advisable to base your card folds on the following tips - But it is also advisable to use your experience and discernment.  Who knows? You may see a sure bluff from your opponent and hold onto that low pair after all.  Otherwise stick to these guideline when playing a hand:

Always hold onto the these hands, which can play for both the Hi and Lo pots:

  • Two pairs of 10's, Jacks, Queens, Kings and Aces

  • Any combination of four cards, each no greater in value than five

  • An Ace with any three face cards of different suits, Ace with any single card of matching suit, Ace with any low cards of different suits, or an Ace with a two, especially three two's.

  • A pair of aces with one ace having the same suit as a third card of any value or a pair of aces matched with all low cards 2 thru 8

  • Three aces with all low card(s)

Always fold these hands (It may seem outrageous, but remember you are playing to win both the Hi and Lo pots, for one pot by itself is not a good money maker in the long run):

  • All four of a kinds

  • All three of a kinds, except for Aces and two's

  • All unpaired middle cards
